L.A. Mayor-elect Antonio Villaraigosa on Thursday announced the members of his transition team that will help him fill staff and commission appointments as he prepares to take office on July 1.

The 81-member transition team, which is being chaired by attorney and former mayoral candidate Robert Hertzberg, is one of the largest transition teams ever assembled for an incoming L.A. mayor.

Not listed on the transition team roster is Robin Kramer, once chief of staff to former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan. Kramer had been informally advising Villaraigosa since the election and was widely expected to have a prominent role on the transition team. Riordan, though, is on the transition team; he supported Villaraigosa both in his failed 2001 mayoral bid and again in this year’s mayoral runoff.

The 81 members of the transition team will sift through thousands of applications expected to be received through a new web portal and make recommendations on their own to the mayor-elect.

Villaraigosa has previously said he intends to replace most of the members of commissions overseeing the harbor and airport departments as well as the Department of Water & Power. Those three departments have been the subject of local and federal investigations into alleged “pay-to-play” contracting practices during the administration of Mayor James Hahn.

Among the business members of the transition team are: David Bohnett, founder of Baroda Ventures LLC; Andrew Cherng, president and chief executive of Panda Restaurant Group Inc.; Earvin “Magic” Johnson, former L.A. Lakers basketball superstar and now inner city investor; Bruce Karatz, chairman and chief executive of KB Homes; Sherry Lansing, past chair of Paramount Pictures’ Motion Picture Group; Monica Lozano, publisher of La Opinión; Dominic Ng, president and chief executive of East/West Bank; Lynn Pike, president of business banking in California for Bank of America; and Richard Ziman, chairman and chief executive of Arden Realty Inc.
