Victorville Races Ahead With Goodyear

Victorville is vastly becoming more recognized than just a stop on the way to Las Vegas, After the formal closure of George Air Force Base in 1992 (now known as Southern California Logistics Airport), Victorville officials have been focusing their efforts on job creation. Victorville has been exploiting its affordable land costs and geographic desirability to the manufacturing and distribution world.

Evidence of those efforts are shown within the recent transaction by and between the City of Victorville, the Victorville Redevelopment Agency, and The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company that involved an incentive package worth just over one million dollars. In return, Goodyear will develop an 827,000 square foot logistics center, employing approximately 100 new employees and investing an estimated twenty-five million dollars in the local community. The logistics center, as proposed by Goodyear, is expected to service the distribution of its tire products to the southwest region of the United States.

Of major influence to Goodyear’s decision were affordability and an extremely friendly business environment. Victorville promotes a pro-growth atmosphere to new and expanding companies and proof of that is reflected in the type of incentive package structured for The Goodyear project, said Keith Metzler, Project Manager for the Victorville Redevelopment Agency.

Victorville is located in Southern California, approximately 40 miles northeast of Ontario and 90 miles from Los Angeles. For decades, Southern California has been experiencing a soaring growth pattern, particularly in the metropolitan Los Angeles area. Of recent, the availability of industrial land has become scarce when considering land costs and the availability of public infrastructure. “That is where Victorville has become so attractive to manufacturing and logistics users,” said Metzler.

Additionally, Victorville remains centrally located to the Southern California marketplace. Victorville is located adjacent to the highly traveled Interstate 15, an “economic lifeline” for Southern California. Within a 50 mile radius of its jurisdictional boundaries, Victorville provides, within a one hour driving time, immediate access to every major interstate corridor landing towards Southern California, Central California, Nevada and Arizona.

Victorville has all of the potential in the world to become a manufacturing and distribution hub for Southern California, especially when considering Victorville’s re-use authority in the redevelopment of Southern California Logistics Airport (SCLA). Upon the closure of George Air Force Base and the transformation of the military installation to SCLA, Victorville expands its capabilities beyond trucking/rail transport by entering into the spectrum of air cargo and freight forwarding in a timely and cost effective manner.

With metropolitan Los Angeles and Orange Counties bursting at the seams, in terms of development, Victorville remains an exciting community to develop industrial, commercial and residential opportunities.
