Topanga Couple Brings Product Liability Lawsuit Against Johnson & Johnson

The parents of a 7-year-old Topanga girl have filed a lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson for failing to warn consumers about the dangerous side effects of Children’s Motrin.

In the suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Kenneth and Joan Johnson say they gave their daughter, Sabrina, Children’s Motrin to relieve a fever about a year ago. The next day, the girl was hospitalized with a rash on her back and redness in her eyes, symptoms of an adverse drug reaction called Stevens Johnson Syndrome. The suit says the girl became blind within a month and has since had 20 eye surgeries.

Her parents claim they would have stopped giving her the drug and called a doctor sooner if the drug makers had included a warning label on the bottle about the risks in taking the medication. The suit claims Johnson & Johnson knew about Stevens Johnson Syndrome in clinical trials during the 1980s and had included a warning label about the disease in the prescription form of the drug before the Food & Drug Administration approved it as an over-the-counter medicine.
