Variety, Tribune in Syndication Deal

Stories from Variety, the Hollywood trade bible, will be distributed nationally to print and online publishers under a new syndication deal with Tribune Media Services, the companies said Monday.

Tribune Media Services, a unit of Chicago-based Tribune Co., the owner of the Los Angeles Times, said it is launching an entertainment news service Sept. 26 in conjunction with Reed Elsevier Plc, the Dutch-based publisher of Variety and other trade publications.

Newspapers, Web sites and other publications that subscribe to Tribune Media Services will be able to buy stories from Los Angeles-based Daily Variety, Weekly Variety, Variety.com, Video Business and the magazine VLife, which publishes features about people involved in the entertainment industry. Tribune Media Services also will syndicate commentaries from Variety Editor-in-Chief Peter Bart and television columnist Brian Lowry.

The arrangement is intended to boost revenues at Tribune, which like other media companies has seen circulation of its newspaper properties drop in the face of competition from cable, the Internet and other new media.
