The Los Angeles International Airport expects to serve 2 percent more travelers this year than last year despite summer travel at the airport remaining flat, according to information released Tuesday by Los Angeles World Airports.

LAX projects that 62 million passengers will pass through the airport this year, compared with 60.7 million in 2004. Of those, 17.6 million will travel during June, July and August, about the same number as in 2004 and 12 percent higher than in 2003.

At LAX, domestic travel fell 3.4 percent in June and 3.1 percent in July from the like months a year earlier. For June and July, international travel was up 7.3 percent and 8.7 percent, respectively, from last year.

Meanwhile, Ontario International Airport projects that it will serve more than 7 million passengers this year, a record for the Inland Empire airport. The facility has had 4.2 million passengers through July this year.

For the Labor Day holiday, LAX said 785,000 travelers are expected to depart and arrive on LAX flights from Friday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 5. Ontario International Airport expects 40,000 during the same period.
