Executive Finds Happiness With Incubation of Newegg

Simon Hsieh has big plans for Newegg.com, a company that sells computing and electronic products online.

Hsieh, who was recently promoted from strategic manager to global chief executive, has developed a three-pronged strategy to help the company go global. The first goal is to make shopping a happy experience for the consumer, he said. He also wants to enhance the relationship with vendors and develop a positive working environment for employees.

Newegg.com opened in 2001 and it now claims about 25,000 orders per day, with 30 percent of its customers first-time buyers. The Web site is kept up to date, so an item isn’t offered for sale if it isn’t in stock. That leads to efficiency in shipping, Hsieh said, with 98 percent of orders sent out within 24 hours.

Newegg.com also provides reviews of products and companies. “We’re not competitors with (vendors),” he said, “so we can work as a marketer for them to launch their products and point out their unique features.”

Going to college in Taiwan, Hsieh majored in electronic engineering and had always been technology oriented. After graduation he moved to West Covina and worked as a missile project manager for Honeywell. In 1982 he moved back to Taiwan where he held marketing jobs through 1995, helping companies grow and go public.

Hsieh worked as a consultant for a time. Then the chairman of Newegg asked him to stay. “I have enough money to enjoy a good life, but this is a good opportunity to fulfill a dream to contribute more and make more people happy,” he said.

In his free time, Hsieh is writing a book to help businesses in Taiwan match American management standards. He also plays golf, listens to jazz and plays some musical instruments, and his passion for travel has taken him to more than 60 countries.
