Disney, Pixar in Talks About Agreement

Walt Disney Co. President Robert Iger said the entertainment giant has opened talks to extend an agreement with Pixar to continue distributing films made by the computer-animation studio, Bloomberg News reported.

“We’ve opened up talks again with Pixar,” Iger said Tuesday at a Deutsche Bank’s annual media/telecom conference in New York.

Pixar’s10-year distribution deal with Disney is set to expire with the release of “Cars” in June. Talks between Pixar and Disney about extending the distribution deal ended last year as Pixar’s Chief Executive Steve Jobs publicly quarreled with outgoing Disney Chief Executive Michael Eisner.

But in May, Jobs suggested that a deal with Disney may still be possible after he held conversations with Iger. At the time, Jobs called his conversations with Disney’s incoming chief executive, Iger, “nice,” but said he wasn’t yet in negotiations to strike a new deal with Disney.

Iger’s comments today show that the icy relationship between Pixar and Disney has begun to thaw since March, when Iger was named to take over as chief executive in September.

“We’d certainly like to figure out a way to continue to do business with them,” Iger said today. “I think that’s mutual. We’ve gotten to understand the issues that are most important to both sides, whether they’re financial or creative.”
