Closely held Gluecode Software was acquired by International Business Machines Corp. on Tuesday as part of the computer giant’s efforts to expand its open-source software offerings.

Financial terms weren’t disclosed, but news reports put the price tag below $100 million.

Gluecode, an El Segundo-based provider of software and support for open-source applications, complements IBM’s WebSphere technology for managing business applications across office networks. IBM will use it to compete with its two main applications server rivals, BEA Systems and JBoss, Reuters reported.

Gluecode’s core product runs with open-source software managed by the Apache Software Foundation, an approach that taps the work of thousands of voluntary contributors to aid in development and debugging. Gluecode’s operations will be integrated into IBM’s Software Group.

IBM shares were down 1.6 percent to $73.81 in midday trading.
