Musician Singing a New Tune as Licensing Executive

Psychology, singing, production and licensing Danielle Lindy covers it all.

The new director of client services for MusicBox, a Los Angeles-based music production boutique, will provide production companies and studios with music from the company’s catalogue and also custom score services for film, TV and advertising.

“Licensing is becoming big alongside custom work music,” Lindy said. “I am here because I’m interested in both.”

If a customer needs an original score, she acts as the liaison between the client and the composers who work for the company. If the customer wants to license music from the MusicBox catalog, she provides them with quotes and issues the license for the music herself. If she’s acting as producer, she handles the bid for the score with the client, as well as the budget and musical composition and recording.

Born in Canada, she started singing in bands in high school. On breaks from her studies for a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Concordia University in Montreal, Lindy held internships at record companies in New York.

She got a master’s degree in interactive communications from New York University in 2001, while also singing in commercials and writing music. While at NYU, she also developed own interactive music mixing game and Web site.

She’s now in charge of all licensing for MusicBox, which has over 1,000 original tracks in its catalogue. Once licensed, the music is used in advertisements, TV shows or movies. Lindy said the industry trend is for studios to license more music, rather than produce it as they have in the past.

Lindy will be involved in promos for the Independent Film Channel, HBO and also for new cartoons for Warner Bros.

She lives in Venice and spends time off work on her band, the Howl.

“It is about indie music and it’s got a pop-punk thing going for it,” she said. “I’m looking forward to working on that.”
