Sport Chalet reported second quarter net income of $1.7 million (12 cents per share), a big improvement from the $5.1 million (-38 cents) net loss from the same period a year earlier.

Sales for the Los Angeles-based sporting equipment retailer increased 12 percent to $91.3 million for the quarter, boosted mainly by strong sales by the company’s six newest stores. Same store sales, a key retail industry indicator, increased 3 percent in the second quarter.

Shares in Sport Chalet closed down 2 cents Tuesday to $9.58.
