China Boosts Herbalife’s Q2

Herbalife Ltd.’s expansion into China helped the company post a record quarter but shares remained stagnant.


Herbalife reported second quarter net income of $48 million (64 cents per share) a 33 percent increase from $36 million (49 cents) from the same period a year earlier. The results beat Wall Street’s expectations of 61 cents per share, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.


Sales for the Los Angeles-based supplement maker were also up 14 percent to $530 million, fueled by strong sales across all of its regions, the company said especially in China. Analysts’ were expecting sales of $507 million.


During the quarter, Herbalife received a new direct-selling license from China’s Ministry of Commerce giving the company access to 61 counties with a population of 85 to 90 million, fueling the company’s Asian expansion plans.


Shares in Herbalife closed down 34 cents, but immediately gained 40 cents in after-hours trading to $42.30 Monday in trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
