Disney Acquires Videogame Developer

Walt Disney Co. said late Thursday it has acquired Warren Spector’s Junction Point Studios in an effort to expand its game-publishing business.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Austin-based Junction Point will be folded into the Burbank-based entertainment company’s Disney Interactive Studios unit and will create games based on Disney characters.

Over the past five years, Disney has made a push to create more of its games in-house versus licensing its characters and content to third-party game publishers. During that span, Disney has acquired four videogame developers, and Disney said it plans to spend $400 million over the next few years to acquire more.

Shares in Disney were down 5 cents to $34.20 in afternoon trading Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.
