Grocery Strike Moves a Step Closer

A vote by Albertsons workers brought the prospect of a grocery store strike a step closer Sunday and conjured up an unhappy sense of deja vu for employees and customers alike, as they wondered what was ahead.


In voting at seven different United Food and Commercial Workers Union locals throughout Southern California, UFCW members at Supervalu Inc.’s Albertsons union give union leaders the authority to call a strike, the Los Angeles Times reports.


Counting of the votes, which was completed shortly before midnight, authorized a strike, but did not set a date. Because of prior agreements, the earliest Albertsons UFCW workers could walk from their jobs would be April 13, and even a strike that day would be unlikely, union representatives say.


The three-year contract for workers at the three largest major Southland grocery chains is set to expire April 9 following after two extensions reached in the last month.
