Walt Disney Co.’s ABC network has reached a deal with Univision Communications Inc. to produce Spanish-language versions of the network’s hit show “Desperate Housewives” for broadcast in the U.S. market.

Disney has hired POL-KA Producciones, a Buenos Aires production company, to make the retooled episodes for U.S. Spanish-speaking viewers, Univision said Monday in a statement.

The series will be called “Amas de Casa Desesperadas,” and will air in primetime on Univision next season. The show’s format and scripts will follow the original U.S. version, “adapted to the preferences of U.S. Hispanic,” markets, Univision said.

ABC, a unit of the Burbank media company, said the move is an effort to expand its advertising appeal to reach Hispanics. Terms of the deal were not released.

Shares in Disney were up 11 cents to $36.18 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
