Iger, Other Execs To Speak at L.A. Commencements

As the academic year comes to an end, area universities have assembled delegates from the real world, including an array of business leaders, to impart their words of wisdom to college grads.

Robert A. Iger, president and chief executive of Walt Disney Co., will speak at USC’s 125th commencement May 16.

Speakers at area business schools include:

– William C. Weldon, who started as a sales rep at Johnson & Johnson and rose to become the company’s chairman and chief executive, will speak at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management on June 13.

– Brent Stevens, executive vice president of New York investment bank Jefferies & Co., will speak at USC’s Leventhal School of Accounting.

– Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, the first chairwoman of the American Red Cross, received an honorary degree and addressed graduates at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business and Management on April 12.

– USC’s Marshall School of Business had not yet named its commencement speaker at press time.

Other notable commencement speakers coming to L.A. include:

Former President Clinton will take a break from campaigning for his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, to address graduates at UCLA’s main ceremony June 13.

Other speakers at UCLA include: Charles Vest, president emeritus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and member of President Bush’s Iraq Intelligence Commission (Henry Samueli School of Engineering); Haile T. Debas, M.D., executive director of UCSF’s public health school (School of Medicine); and U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman (School of Public Health).

Across town at USC, constitutional law scholar Erwin Chemerinsky will address the graduates of the Gould School of Law; author Arianna Huffington and actress Geena Davis will address the graduates of the Annenberg School for Communication’s School of Journalism and School of Communication, respectively; and Nobel Prize-winning chemist Kary Mullis will speak at the Keck School of Medicine.
