Union Reviews Port Contract

About 100 representatives from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union are meeting in San Francisco this week to review a proposed labor contract with the Pacific Maritime Association.

The weeklong caucus kicked off Monday, allowing selected union members to discuss details contained in the pending six-year pact with the PMA, according to ILWU spokesman Craig Merrilees.

If approved, the proposal will go up for a ratification vote by some 26,000 unionized longshore workers, marine clerks and foremen at 29 ports in California, Oregon and Washington, about 20,000 of whom work at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
