Second ‘Green’ Hangar Proposed for Valley

Maguire Aviation and Shangri-La Construction said Tuesday they are in negotiations to build the first “green” jet hangar at Van Nuys Airport, the second such facility in the San Fernando Valley.

The facility would be similar to a $17-million environmentally friendly hangar that billionaire Steve Bing’s Shangri-La unveiled this morning at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. The new 60,000-square-foot structure is believed to be the industry’s only solar-powered airport hangar, and is Shangri-La’s first project of its type.

Designed to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, Shangri-La’s hangers feature rooftop photovoltaic panels that will power the building’s lights and recharge electric-powered ground equipment such as tow vehicles.

Officers at Maguire Aviation and Shangri-La Construction said they hope the proposed project at Van Nuys will be the first of several environmentally sustainable projects they will collaborate on.

Maguire Aviation is the largest landholder and fixed-based aircraft operator at Van Nuys airport. The company currently leases 59 acres at the airport, and plans to invest $250 million in development there.

Maguire Aviation Chairman Robert Maguire, who made his fortune in commercial real estate development and became downtown Los Angeles’ largest landlord before moving into the aviation industry, said he has extensive experience developing LEED-certified buildings.

“Our mission is to be good neighbors and good citizens in our sustainable development program at Van Nuys Airport,” said Maguire in a statement. “By reducing noise and air pollution at the airport, the community benefits.”

Shangri-La is a new venture for Bing, better known as a film producer and heir to a real estate fortune.

The just opened hangar at the Burbank airport is a joint venture among Century City-based Shangri-La, Burbank aviation services company Avjet Corp., and the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.
