People’s Liberation Inc. said Thursday it is pulling its trendy denim apparel out of high-end department stores, and has made boutique retailer Charlotte Russe Holding Inc. its exclusive distributor in North and Central America.

Under the multi-year agreement, Los Angeles-based People’s Liberation will design, source and produce branded premium denim, casual knits, active wear and accessories for sale exclusively in Charlotte Russe stores.

People’s Liberation denim, knits and activewear currently is sold in such boutiques and department stores as Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Kitson, Atrium, and Fred Segal. It will be sold exclusively through the San Diego-based Russe starting in next year’s back-to-school season.

“We believe that rolling out People’s Liberation apparel and accessories into the Charlotte Russe customer base will strategically enhance sales for both our company and Charlotte Russe while keeping the DNA and integrity of the People’s Liberation brand,” said Chief Executive Colin Dyne in a statement.

People’s Liberation, which touts pop star Justin Timberlake as a creative partner, said net sales rose 76 percent in the third quarter but the company reported a $1.5 million loss, compared with $598,000 net income a year ago, due to the cost of expansion efforts. Earlier this year it announced distribution deals for its William Rast luxury line in Italy and Russia.

People’s Liberation shares were up 4 cent, or 25 percent, to 20 cents in morning trading on the over-the-counter Bulletin Board.
