DreamWorks Animation SKG returned to a profit in the fourth quarter on strong home video sales of “Shrek the Third” and the absence of the year earlier’s big write-down, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The animation studio reported net income of $94.1 million, or 98 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $21.3 million, or 20 cents a share, a year earlier.

The latest results included a net seven-cent gain from a tax benefit and a tax benefit paid to stockholders. Prior-year results included a $109 million write-down on the animated movie “Flushed Away” after weaker-than-expected ticket sales. Revenue jumped 42% to $290.2 million.

Analysts’ mean estimates were for earnings of 72 cents a share on revenue of $277 million, according to a poll by Thomson Financial. Gross margin was 52.4%.

DreamWorks said $179.4 million in revenue was contributed by “Shrek the Third,” which stars Mike Myers as a green-skinned ogre and Eddie Murphy as his donkey sidekick. The film was released on DVD in the U.S. on Nov. 13 and had shipped 15.6 million units by the end of the year world-wide.
