NTI Group, a startup that provides emergency and time-sensitive alert services to schools, is being acquired by a Washington D.C.-based educational software maker in a $182 million cash-and-stock deal announced Monday.

NTI, based in Sherman Oaks, will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Blackboard Inc., a maker of electronic keycards for dorms and educational software that puts lectures online. Both companies also serve the K-12, post-secondary and municipal market.

“Together, we serve similar markets but offer different services. It’s a major growth opportunity,” said Natasha Rabe, chief business officer of NTI.

NTI Group employs 100 people and generated $30 million in revenue last year. It distributes up to 25 million time-sensitive messages monthly on behalf of municipalities and schools

Blackboard will pay $132 million in cash and $50 million in stock for NTI. Blackboard projects revenues of up to $284 million next year, exclusive of the NTI acquisition.
