Tenet Sells Tarzana Med Center

Tenet Healthcare Corp. said it has sold Tarzana Regional Medical Center, the remaining Los Angeles area hospital it was actively marketing, to Providence Health & Services for an undisclosed amount.

Tarzana’s 1,200 employees, including hospital administrator Dale Surowitz, are expected to remain at the hospital. The sale is expected to take two months to close.

Tarzana has been for sale for more than four years in large part due to an ongoing dispute between Tenet and the building’s property owner, Long Beach-based HCP Inc. The long-speculated sale to Seattle-based Providence, which operates three other hospitals in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, was made possible by a settlement between Tenet and HCP that also was announced on Monday.

Tarzana’s sister hospital, Encino Hospital Medical Center was acquired by Victorville-based Prime Healthcare in June along with two other Tenet hospitals.

Tenet, once this region’s largest hospital operator, still has a handful of facilities in Southern California. The University of Southern California is attempting to take over management of the Tenet-operated USC University Hospital and USC Norris Cancer Hospital.
