Port and maritime officials launched a new era of “green” shipping operations Tuesday, as the first cargo-container ship plugged into clean dockside electrical power.
The new technology allows berthed ships to shut off polluting engines – now left running idle to generate power aboard the ships – and instead reduce emissions by switching to a dockside power source that’s designed to cut back Southland environmental problems.
This process, called “cold ironing,” would cut smog-forming pollutants from ships at the port by 90 percent, harbor officials contend.
