The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce saw its budget grow to $8.2 million for the 2008 fiscal year, up from $6.2 million in 2007. It remains the largest chamber ranked by budget in Los Angeles County.

The Los Angeles chamber focuses on advocacy on local, state and national levels that affect its membership. The chamber has endorsed more than $22 billion in bonds on the state and local levels on the upcoming November ballot, as well as a half-cent increase in Los Angeles County’s sales tax that would generate $40 billion in revenue for local transportation projects.

Transportation projects include greatly expanded subway service, such as the planned “subway to the sea.”

In addition to supporting increased funding for public transportation, the chamber’s advocacy agenda includes supporting renovations at Los Angeles International Airport, and expanding international trade through the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The chamber is the contact point for delegations from other countries looking for ways to expand international trade.

The chamber hosts several hundred events during the course of the year, including business mixers and speakers’ series. Larger events include the World Trade Week in May, and lobbying trips to Sacramento and Washington, D.C.

Founded in 1888, the chamber has 1,620 members, up from 1,560 members a year ago.
