American Apparel Inc. said Thursday that its same-store sales fell 11 percent in March as overall consumer spending remained weak.
In a pre-earnings sales announcement, the Los Angeles clothing manufacturer and retailer said that including new locations, total retail sales rose 12 percent to $28.2 million last month.
For the first quarter ended March 31, the company said same-store sales at stores open at least a year declined 7 percent. Total retail sales grew 21 percent to $77.9 million.
American Apparel, which operates more than 260 retail stores in 19 countries, opened six stores and closed one during the quarter.
American Apparel shares were up 8 cents, or 2 percent, to $3.72 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.
