The Port of Los Angeles fared better than its Long Beach rival when it came to moving cargo shipments in January, but business is still down from last year, according to a report released Wednesday.

Cargo container shipments through the Port of Los Angeles dropped 10 percent in January compared to last year, with the port moving 587,004 twenty-foot cargo container units, or TEUs, last month, down from January 2008’s shipment of 652,236 TEUs.

The Los Angeles figures for January are slightly up from December, when the port saw its largest dip in recent months, with 561,033 TEUs shipped, 15 percent lower than the year before.

After the Los Angeles port reported a 6 percent drop in container volume in 2008 its largest decline after 20 years of steady growth officials warned shipments would likely drop by double digits in 2009.

The Port of Long Beach saw cargo container shipments drop 23 percent in January compared to last year. That’s the lowest level in five years, port officials said.
