LAX Passenger Traffic Drops Again

Airline passenger traffic dropped for a 15th consecutive month at Los Angeles International Airport, which handled 9 percent fewer travelers in June compared with the same period last year, according to Los Angeles World Airports, the agency that operates the airport.

LAX saw 6.45 percent fewer domestic airline passengers in last month, along with a 15.9 percent drop in international travelers. Year-over-year comparisons show that LAX logged an overall decline of 10.8 percent in passenger travel during the first six months of 2009.

LAX served 59.5 million travelers in 2008, a significant drop from the 68 million passengers who passed through the airport during its peak in 2000. Halfway through 2009, LAX is on pace to handle about 55 million passengers this year, which is the lowest number of travelers to pass through the airport since the mid-1990s.

While declines in domestic passenger traffic were less severe than in international business, the figures suggest more people are staying home for the summer rather than take advantage of the large number of airfare sales.
