The Cheesecake Factory Inc. said that its second-quarter net income fell 13 percent as cash-strapped customers ate out less, but the results were still better than Wall Street expected.

The Calabasas Hills casual dining restaurant chain late Thursday reported net income of $16.6 million (28 cents per share), compared with $19.1 million (29 cents) a year ago. Revenue rose 0.2 percent to $407.9 million. Same-store sales in locations open at least 18 months were down 3.2 percent.

Excluding charges, the company had a profit of 32 cents per share. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters, on average, had expected net income of 26 cents per share on revenue of $403 million.

Chief Executive David Overton said that despite cost controls implemented as the recession took hold, traffic at the company’s restaurants grew during the quarter and guest satisfaction scores have improved. The company is planning further cost cutting in order to improve margins.

“We are carefully balancing our cost containment efforts so as not to reduce the experience that guests have in our restaurants, and we are pleased with the results that we are delivering in both areas,” Overton said in a statement

Shares were down $1.17, or 6 percent, $17.94 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.
