L.A. Ports, Airport Management Unhappy with Labor Pact

The heads of Los Angeles World Airports and the Port of Los Angeles said they are upset with a labor pact recently struck between the City Council and the Coalition of LA City Unions that’s supposed to save about $58 million between now and June 30.

Geraldine Knatz, executive director of the port, and Gina Marie Lindsey, executive director of LAWA, said that cutting the pay of thousands of employees by 3.5 hours in each 80-hour pay period would severely hamper their 24-hour operations.

On top of that, any savings reaped by the harbor and airport departments cannot be transferred to the city’s coffers because the two proprietary departments operate on their own independent budgets.

On Oct. 30, the City Council unanimously approved a deal that calls for trimming 4.4 percent from the paychecks of about 22,000 civilian employees citywide by cutting 3.5 hours in each 80-hour pay period. The move affects about 3,000 LAWA employees working at LAX, LA/Ontario International Airport and Van Nuys Airport, along with more than 500 harbor department employees.
