Judge in ‘Bratz’ Case to Quit

Stephen Larson, the federal judge overseeing the high-profile Mattel-MGA Bratz doll case, said he is resigning to go into private practice, saying his salary is too low to let him support his seven children.

Larson, 44, will step down from the bench for the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Nov. 2, just 3-1/2 years after becoming a district judge based in Riverside. He was previously a federal magistrate judge for six years.

The judge’s cases included Mattel Inc’s successful $100 million lawsuit against MGA Entertainment Inc over a claim that a Barbie doll designer created the concept for MGA’s Bratz dolls while he was under contract to Mattel.
