The Los Angeles Community College District’s board of trustees has named a state education official from Virginia to head its nine campuses.

Daniel LaVista, the new chancellor, is executive director for Virginia’s Council of Higher Education, which coordinates education efforts for the state’s public colleges and universities, a district spokesman said in a written statement. LaVista, 66, will replace interim chancellor Tyree Wieder on Aug. 1, at an annual salary of $370,000 a year. Board president Mona Field said LaVista emphasized in his interview for the position that his focus was students.

“The chamber applauds the district for conducting a thorough search that included looking at local, as well as out-of-state candidates in order to find the absolute best candidate,” said Los Angeles Area Chamber Chief Executive Gary Toebben in a statement. “We look forward to working with LaVista to build a community college system that prepares students to complete globally in the 21st century by dramatically increasing graduation and transfer rates.”
