Bankrupt Rock and Republic To Sell Brand

VF Corp., whose denim brands include Wrangler and Lee, on Tuesday said it is adding the trendy Rock and Republic name to its stable of apparel labels.

Bankrupt Culver City jeans maker Rock and Republic Enterprises is selling the brand to VF, a Greensboro, N.C. public company with 30 lifestyle brands that trend toward mainstream sportswear, such as North Face and JanSport. It has one other upscale denim brand, 7 For All Mankind.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but several industry blogs say VF is paying $57 million for the brand. The deal must still get approval from the bankruptcy court. The transaction is expected to close this spring. VF Corp. has not said whether it plans to keep operations in the Los Angeles area.

VF stepped in as a suitor after a deal announced in September with Bluestar Alliance, a New York brand-management company with a portfolio that includes Shaper Image, apparently fell apart earlier this month.

“Rock and Republic wishes to assure its customers that the transition over the next few months will be smooth and seamless, and that all orders will continue to be filled pursuant to their terms,” the company said.

Founded by bad-boy designer Michael Ball, Rock & Republic filed for bankruptcy reorganization in April in New York.
