Maria Elena Durazo Reelected to Powerful Labor Post

Maria Elena Durazo was reelected Monday evening to a second four-year term as head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, the county’s largest labor group and a political powerhouse.

Durazo was an early supporter of Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign and served as national co-chair of his campaign committee.

The daughter of farm workers who formerly headed the major hotel workers local in Los Angeles, Durazo said public-sector unions are being made a “scapegoat” as cities and states across the country cut personnel and payrolls to deal with budget shortfalls.
