Remember “Math Blaster,” the game your kids played to learn the basics of arithmetic in the days of CD-ROM?

Now that the disc is going the way of the Atari, Knowledge Adventure, the Torrance company behind the intergalactic-themed game, has launched “Math Blaster” online.

“Part of the refreshing of our brand has been going online,” said Chief Executive David Lord. “We needed to bring the franchise to life with new technology.”

“Math Blaster” put its numbers game on the Internet in January with a freemium model. Kids can play some games for free but must pay a subscription fee, ranging from $8 a month to $150 for a lifetime membership, for access to all the games and activities on the website.

Lord said the online platform enables Knowledge Adventure to add games and features, which keeps “Math Blaster” players, typically kids between 7 and 13, more engaged.

The company has 55 employees in Torrance and an additional 60 in Bangalore, India. Its other game, “JumpStart,” which teaches math and other reading and reasoning skills, went online in 2008.

Knowledge Adventure is turning its sights to the international market. “Math Blaster” in Spanish launched last month and more foreign-language versions are in the works.

“Online gaming has become a worldwide phenomenon,” Lord said. “We launched in Spanish to be a player.”
