Revenge of The Nerds

The news on all things geek is coming to Los Angeles with the help of some Hollywood and technology investors.

GeekChicDaily, a Santa Monica company that creates a nationwide e-mail newsletter that reports on the latest in entertainment and tech, will launch an L.A. edition this week. Other regional editions may follow.

The newsletter began in late 2009 and goes out to fans of films, video games, comic books and such. Those who sign up get a free e-mail each weekday. The company makes money selling ads.

Now, thanks to the investor cash, GeekChicLA will launch Thursday. It initially will come out three days a week, and cover local artists, film festivals, gallery openings and other events. The company is considering publishing local editions for Seattle, San Francisco, New York and Chicago.

Peter Levin, co-founder and chief executive of GeekChicDaily, said the newsletter’s readers want more localized stories.

“We were getting a lot of feedback from our readers about their desire to better understand what was going on in their backyard,” he said.

The company chose Los Angeles for its first regional e-mail because of the city’s close ties to the entertainment industry, Levin said.

The national newsletter, which will continue, is sent to about 1 million e-mail addresses a week. Articles are available online, but the website encourages visitors to sign up for the e-mails.

The 11-person company’s expansion is fueled by its recent funding round, which ended in January. Hollywood producer Joe Roth, Seattle Internet investor Mike Slade and former Legendary Digital President Kathy Vrabeck are some of the new backers.

“I’d say we did a good job of bringing together a group that is very meaningful to this audience,” Levin said. “We think the group will help us execute our goals.”
