Battery Maker in Azusa Doubles Up Product Offerings

Contour Energy Systems Inc., an Azusa startup, has come out with its second product line in as many months: a collection of what it calls “next-generation” coin-size cell batteries to power LED lighting systems, calculators, cameras and other devices.

The batteries, the company claims, are made using a proprietary chemical process that enables them to operate at extremely high or low temperatures and last up to 60 percent longer.

“These coin cells will be our sliced bread,” said company spokesman Kevin Gallagher.

The batteries were introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this month. Available at Amazon.com, Fry’s Electronics and other outlets, they sell for a suggested retail price of $2.99 apiece or $14.99 for a pack of six.

The year-old manufacturer released its first product in November: a 3-volt lithium battery the size of a quarter designed to power glasses for 3-D TV.

Swat on the Wrist

Kinetic Solutions Inc., a Downey-based manufacturer that makes air purification products under the name of Rabbit Air, has been fined $82,400 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for violating federal law.

According to the EPA’s complaint, the company “made illegal public health claims” for its air purifier branded “Nano Silver Pre filter” and the filter’s ability to control over 650 types of bacteria, a violation of the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act.

In addition, the EPA said, the purifiers did not list valid EPA establishment numbers on their packaging as required by federal law.

In response to the allegations, the company issued a statement saying “we have reached a resolution with the EPA and continue to focus on providing the best quality air purifiers for our customers.”
