Freeway Breaks

Leave it to businesses to figure out how to take advantage of Carmageddon – the upcoming closure of the San Diego (405) Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass.

Figuring most people won’t want to venture too far because of the expected traffic snarls, the Wilshire restaurant in Santa Monica and the Four Seasons Westlake Village are among businesses offering specials to customers on the weekend of July 16-17.

Wilshire, a restaurant noted for its fresh California cuisine and al fresco dining, was at first going to close for the weekend, but is now offering a four-course, fixed-price meal for $40.05 on that weekend’s Friday and Saturday nights, and the following Monday night.

“We wanted to give people something to look forward to. I think if we give people a reason to come out, they may brave the traffic,” said Nick Fielding, general manager of the restaurant at 2454 Wilshire Blvd., which is closed Sundays.

On the other side of the hill, the Four Seasons Westlake Village will offer a 405-themed weekend discount that will stretch until July 31.

“We thought that this would be very appealing for people who wanted to enjoy a weekend vacation,” said Stuart Burdette, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing.

The discount includes a two-night weekend stay starting at $405, down from the normal rate of $560, a late checkout time of 4:05 p.m. Sundays, and dinners more than one-third off on Fridays and Saturdays.

The freeway, of course, is one of the busiest in the country and is the main artery between L.A.’s Westside and the San Fernando Valley. It is being shut from midnight the night of Friday, July 15, until 5 a.m. Monday, July 18, for the demolition of the Mulholland Drive bridge.
