L.A. Port Traffic Improves

The Port of Los Angeles handled more cargo in October than it did the same month last year, posting its first growth since June, according to figures released Tuesday.

Cargo traffic increased by 4.4 percent for the month after a slow holiday shipping season that saw traffic fall in each of the previous months.

One of the big traffic drivers in October was strong export growth due to the weak U.S. dollar, said port spokesman Phillip Sanfield.

“It was a great month for exports,” he said. “We reached our highest one-month export volume in port history.”

Exports were up 28 percent year-over-year after similar gains in August and September.

The port is on pace to beat last year’s 12-month total for exports by the end of this month. Exports of cotton and grain to China have been particularly strong, Sanfield said.
