Brewer Hopes To Spread His Craft

Beer lovers may soon know the 91406 ZIP code as well as ’90s TV viewers came to know 90210.

Why? Anheuser-Busch Inc. of St. Louis has created six craft beers, each boasting the ZIP code of the brewing facility where it was made. And the creation made in the Van Nuys facility, called Small Batch 91406, is one of them. The hoppy amber ale was made by local brewmaster Bryan Sullivan and colleagues from Budweiser’s breweries in Fairfield in the Bay Area and Dallas.

If it proves to be one of the three most popular of the six brews — based on feedback from young customers and retailers — it would be available in a sampler pack this fall.

Project 12, named for the dozen Budweiser brewing facilities in the country, is a friendly competition pitting six brew crews against each other this summer. It’s aimed to let young customers, who tend to be more interested in craft beers, know that the company brews small local batches. The Van Nuys facility supplies its Budweiser and Michelob brands to the Southwest region and Hawaii.

Sullivan started working for Budweiser as a college intern about 10 years ago. His veteran status doesn’t seem to have dampened his enthusiasm for playing with yeast.

“Brewing is an art and a science, which is why I love it,” he said. “That’s basically what makes me tick, coming to work every day. It doesn’t even feel like a job.”
