Doggie Bags Made to Go

Dog poop ranks high on the biodegradable scale, but pet owners usually clean it up by wrapping it in plastic bags that prevent nature from taking its course.

But now Eco Dog Planet in Beverly Hills hopes to change that with doggie waste bags manufactured from tapioca starch. The bags decay within weeks of landfill burial.

The bags are available in some boutique pet stores in Los Angeles and on the company’s website.

But bio-friendly convenience comes at a price. Consumers can buy 60 Eco Dog bags for $9.99, or about 17 cents a bag, while other biodegradable bags sell for about 4 cents each. Typical plastic bags sell for less than 3 cents apiece.

Chief Executive Chris King said the product’s initial adopters are people who think plastics are bad for the environment, not value shoppers.

And King contends that Eco Dog’s material, imported from Indonesia, provides an easy-to-use experience. Other biodegradable bags are sometimes thin and sticky.

“As a dog owner, I don’t want to see or feel what I’m picking up,” he explained. “Once people get our product in their hands, they convert because the material is super thick.”

Eco Dog launched in February and has six employees. If the bags are a hit, the company may expand its product line to pet water bowls and toys manufactured from tapioca starch.

King, a management consultant, started the company after learning about Indonesian tapioca while working for a Canadian plastic bag manufacturer.
