Celsya, an online service helping family members take care of the elderly, West Hollywood

EMPLOYEES: 3

FINANCIALS: $175,000 in startup costs

What led you to start your company?

I came up with Celsya in 2005 while I was a caregiver for my grandmother. I wanted a better solution to help her stay independent, easily manage her daily health needs and enable the family to coordinate care for her.

What was the biggest challenge starting your own company?

The biggest challenge is not knowing what challenges come up in the process. Without having mentors or a partner, I had to figure out how to build a business on my own. I believe that knowing how to overcome the challenges are what defines an entrepreneur.

Where did you get the startup money?

I saved up money from my previous jobs, used that money to invest into a product invention called Headphonies, which I used as a process to learn how to start a business and production. I sold off the Headphonies brand to another company and then started a consultancy for product development and manufacturing. At that point, I felt I had enough money and experience to start Celsya.

How many hours a day do you put in?

About 14 to 16 hours.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned?

No matter how much you think you know what your customers want, you don’t really know until you put the product out there. It’s better not to overthink and just start simple.

Could you ever work for someone else?

If I ever need to work for someone again, it would be for a small business or another startup. Corporate environments are too limiting for an entrepreneur.

Will you start another company?

Definitely. I am currently starting a side company called KDGT that will be gadgets for children.

What do you do to relax?

I like to hike: fresh air, sun, exercise and time to think.
