License to Lease

For those who don’t know commercial real estate, the license plate on Paul Sablock’s GMC Suburban doesn’t mean much. It reads 32FTCLR.

But for insiders, the plate brands Sablock as an industrial real estate broker. Translated, that’s 32-foot clear, a term that means an industrial building has floor-to-ceiling clearance of 32 feet. That’s the standard for Class A buildings.

Sablock, 55, an executive vice president at brokerage Jones Lang LaSalle, has had similar plates since 1995, upgrading over the years as building standards have changed. He started with 24FTCLR, bumped it up to 30FTCLR six years ago and got his latest plate last year. It’s a signal to clients of his commitment.

“I believe in my craft and I want them to know what I do,” he said.

He’s so committed, in fact, that he’s already planning to change plates again. Sablock is working on a new industrial project in Commerce that will have 36-foot ceilings.

“Now that this is out, I guess I’ll have to go get 36FTCLR,” he said. “Before someone else does it.”

Keeping Beat

Brian Zarlenga’s side gig takes moonlighting to a whole new tempo.

The Apogee Electronics Corp. marketing manager gets his kicks playing la batería – or drums – for major Latin rock singer Gustavo Galindo.

He and Galindo have played together since 2006, when they formed the band Blue Judy.

When the singer decided to go solo, Zarlenga joined the backup band, and that’s worked out well. Galindo garnered a Grammy nomination last year. The fact that Galindo looks and sounds a lot like John Mayer hasn’t hurt his career, Zarlenga said.

But that success has made for some off-beat scheduling. It means gigs in Mexico and on TV that keep him working crazy hours for his two jobs.

“It’s a lot of shows at 5 a.m. and getting to work at 9 a.m.,” he said.

Though Zarlenga’s musical chops have served him well, there’s one relevant skill he lacks: “I don’t speak any Spanish.”
