Weighing In On Fitness

Manufacturing companies aren’t typically known for having healthy work environments, but wellness programs at City of Industry commercial carpet-maker Bentley Prince Street Inc. have resulted in a big win for the company.

“The Biggest Loser,” NBC’s reality TV show about weight loss, featured Bentley Prince on its Jan. 14 episode because the company offers employees a range of physical fitness programs. At Bentley Prince, which carpeted the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, the 350 employees can take part in lunchtime Pilates and yoga sessions, a daily walking club, sponsored 5K runs and other activities. There’s also mandatory stretching for all staff members before each shift.

The headquarters includes a 5,000-square-foot gym and employs two full-time trainers. When employees participate in enough activities, they can receive gift certificates for fitness equipment and sporting goods.

Cathy Frial, who oversees Bentley Prince’s health efforts as its vice president for organizational development, said the programs are especially important for manufacturing workers who are prone to health problems and injuries.

“It helps by keeping people well, keeping them at work and keeping them safe,” she said.

Frial said the programs help the company in its hiring and that she hopes that other small companies and manufacturers will follow its example. She even presents her company’s program to executives at other firms.

“Ultimately, it’s about higher engagement, which leads to greater productivity,” she said. “We believe it’s the right thing to do for the associates.”
