Deli Helped Out of Pickle

The Westside building that was once home to Junior’s Deli is back – and its workers, too.

The reopening of the restaurant as Lenny’s Deli means the workers – waitresses, kitchen staff, cashiers – all get to keep their jobs.

“I know how important these jobs are to people,” owner Lenny Rosenberg said. “We’re currently employing over 100 people, and from that number, 80 to 90 of them were original employees of Junior’s.”

Junior’s was a well-known Westside hangout that got some press attention when it closed in December.

Rosenberg was a regular at Junior’s before he took it over and reopened it last month. “When I heard about Junior’s closing I called the landlord immediately to see if I could come in,” he said.

Rosenberg, who had owned delis in the past – in New Jersey, New York state and Beverly Hills – made a deal with the landlord. He did not disclose the terms.

Then he reached out to the previous co-owners and bought their equipment.

In the two months that Junior’s was closed, Rosenberg remodeled and revamped the previous menu, adding all natural organic items and gluten-free vegetarian entrees.

“I want this place to be a modern new-age deli,” he said. “I had been thinking about opening another deli and this just seemed like a good opportunity.”
