Smart & Final Going Public

Smart & Final Stores Inc. has filed for an initial public offering.

The Commerce warehouse retailer is currently owned by Century City private equity firm Ares Management, which bought the company in 2012 from another private equity fund for $975 million.

Smart & Final plans to raise up to $100 million in the IPO, according to documents it filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission last month. It will use that money to repay debt as well as general business purposes, according to Chief Executive David Hirz.

Smart & Final will list its shares under the ticker symbol SFS. The company was founded in 1871 and changed its name to Smart & Final 100 years ago. The filing was announced June 20.
