Smart & Final, Green Dot Among Week’s Biggest Movers

The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the area’s largest public companies fell for the week.

The weighted LABJ Stock Index went down 2 percent to 201. Laggers outpaced gainers by 127 to 27, with seven companies unchanged.

Among stocks trading above a dollar, Commerce warehouse retailer Smart & Final Stores Inc. was among the week’s leading gainers. Shares rose 14 percent to close the week at $13.70 after the company raised $160 million in its initial public offering Tuesday.

Pasadena prepaid debit-card provider Green Dot Corp. also had a strong week. Shares rose 14 percent to close $22.27 after the company announced plans to strengthen ties with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the main seller of its cards. Wal-Mart will become the exclusive distributor of GoBank, Green Dot’s mobile-based checking account system.

Los Angeles water resources company Cadiz Inc. was among the week’s losing stocks. Shares fell 11 percent to close at $10.20.
