California regulators unveiled a roadmap Wednesday to let consumers begin using self-driving cars, the Associated Press reports. The draft regulations from California’s Department of Motor Vehicles require the cars to have a steering wheel, and a licensed driver must be ready to take over if the machine fails.

The regulations would allow Californians to be behind the wheel of a self-driving car by 2017, the AP says.
