Holiday Weekend Travel Up, Summer Travel Expected to Climb

If you’re traveling this weekend, you may want to get to Los Angeles International Airport early.

About 811,000 travelers are expected to pass through LAX this holiday weekend, an increase of 7 percent over last year and a record for the airport. And today is expected to be the busiest day of the weekend travel period, with an expected 218,000 passengers flying in and out.

LAX is preparing for the large numbers by beefing up its police presence to manage the crowds and cars, said Nancy Castles, a spokeswoman for airport operator Los Angeles World Airports.

Passenger figures are expected to climb beyond last year’s numbers all summer, with LAX officials predicting around 25 million passengers will travel through the airport. That’s an expected 7 percent bump over last summer’s 23 million passengers, which was a record for the airport. The expected boost comes as airlines add more international flights in and out of LAX and as a strong U.S. dollar makes overseas travel more attractive for Americans.

Though LAX will be packed this weekend, neither today nor Memorial Day itself will be the airport’s busiest day of the summer. That’s expected to come on Monday, July 27, when about 245,000 travelers are expected to pass through the airport. That would set a new single-day record for LAX, Castles said.
