App Links Daters’ Fate To Stars

Looking for a soulmate based on zodiac signs? Yes, there’s an app for that.

Aliza Kelly Faragher and Helen Grossman, co-founders of BeenBusy in Los Angeles, launched Align earlier this month to match users based on astrological compatibility, along with a few other factors.

Faragher said they were disappointed by their efforts to find dates via mobile applications, and when they saw a 2012 study by the National Science Foundation that found that more Americans felt astrology had some degree of science to it, a light bulb went on.

“Our experience from other dating apps – we tried everything up to this point –tended to be quite soulless,” she said. “We’re looking for meaning, rather than just are you hot or not. We felt that astrology provided something easy, effective and fun.”

Align users create a profile based on their birth date, age and ZIP code and they select personality traits from a list based on their zodiac sign. Each day, users get five matches ranked from least to most likely compatible.

Once users choose a match, they can chat in a separate screen. Align uses Facebook’s security system, and Faragher and Grossman can remove offenders.

The free iOS app attracted 5,000 users in its first few weeks, Grossman said.
