Who’s On Adweek’s New Power List?

Adweek has unveiled its first ever Power List, ranking the 100 most influential, innovative and effective leaders controlling media, marketing and technology.

And while Los Angeles dominates the nation’s media landscape, there aren’t as many local executives on the list as you might expect. Rather, the list shows the growing influence of tech companies in the evolving media and marketing space and the continued advertising might of Fortune 500 firms.

The only local exec to crack to top five is No. 4 Robert Iger, chairman and chief executive of Burbank’s Walt Disney Co. Above him on the list are Google Chief Executive Larry Page at No. 1, Apple chief Tim Cook at No. 2 and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg at No. 3. Just below Iger at No. 5 is Procter & Gamble chairman A.G. Lafley.

Iger, 64, is credited with revitalizing and expanding Disney’s empire in his decade at the helm which has seen savvy acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm and the company’s market cap more than doubling to $185 billion.

Other Angelenos listed include No. 27 Bobby Kotick of Santa Monica video game publisher Activision Blizzard for his success with game franchises “Call of Duty” and “World of Warcraft,” No. 72 Elon Musk of SpaceX and Tesla Motors, No. 73 Michael White of El Segundo’s DirecTV and No. 79 Evan Spiegel of Venice app-maker Snapchat.

Entertainment titans who live elsewhere but have businesses in L.A. include Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch at No. 6 and Oprah Winfrey Network chief Oprah Winfrey at 41.

To assemble its inaugural power list, Adweek magazine considered the profiles and results of corporate titans, taking into account such criteria as the value of company assets, revenue and revenue growth, consumer reach and affinity, market performance, standing among rivals, number of employees overseen, key acquisitions and partnerships, and industry accolades and media buzz.
