New Activision Game Sets Digital Record

Activision Blizzard Inc., the Santa Monica video game publisher behind the massive Call of Duty and World of Warcraft franchises, has a new hit on its hands.

The company said today that the newest installment of its Destiny game series, known as “The Taken King,” had more first-day-of-release downloads than any game in Sony PlayStation history.

More people also played “The Taken King” online during its first day than played the original Destiny game in its first 24 hours on the market a year ago, Activision said.

The company did not release specific numbers or sales figures.

The development is further evidence of Activision’s transition from a retail-driven game maker into a digital-first publisher.

In the quarter ended June 30, about 80 percent of Activision’s $759 million in revenue came from online channels, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing. These purchases come in the form of full-game downloads, expansion packs, subscriptions and virtual goods.
